Development of an adapted version of polar organic chemical integrative samplers (POCIS-Nylon)

Abstract: POCIS (polar organic chemical integrative samplers) are increasingly used for sampling polar compounds. Although very efficient for a wide range of pollutants, the classic configuration of the device has a number of limitations, in particular for the sampling of highly polar analytes and hydrophobic compounds. This study presents a new version of the POCIS passive sampler which uses a highly porous Nylon membrane of 30 μm pore size, enabling the sampling of hydrophobic pollutants and improving the accumulation… Show more

“…Briefly, dissolved (<0.7 μm fraction) pesticides and PFASs were extracted using solid-phase extraction with polymeric sorbents (100-500 mL samples) followed by analysis by liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry Munoz et al 2015), while alkylphenols were determined using solid-phase microextraction and gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (Belles et al 2014). Freeze-dried sediment (1 g) or gammarid (0.2 g) samples were extracted using microwave-assisted extraction followed by solid-phase extraction adsorption chromatography cleanup (Budzinski et al 2000;Nouira et al 2013;Munoz et al 2015).…”

“…Indeed, membranes used in-house assembled samplers are well described in the literature. For instance, there are nylon membranes enabling the sampling of hydrophobic pollutants and with an improved rate of accumulation for other pollutants (Belles et al 2014). An innovative approach was introduced by Chen et al (Chen et al 2012;Chen et al 2013), which used a gel-based layer instead of a membrane.…”

“…POCIS are also deployed in agricultural watersheds (Jairnes-Correa et al 2015), areas of pharmaceutical industrial activity or hospital effluents (Bailly et al 2013), to investigate the degree of contamination by particular pollutants. Spiked water samples and laboratory tests are commonly used in studies on the kinetics of uptake of new micropollutants and evaluation of various physical effects on the sampler or the characterization of the innovative features of future POCIS (Li et al 2011;Carlson et al 2013;Morin et al 2013;Belles et al 2014;Kaserzon et al 2014). These approaches often include a range of analytes with different physical-chemical properties (basic, acidic, phenolic and neutral) which provide a better insight into the new samplers' efficiency for monitoring various analytes.…”
