Development of an analytical method for determination of lead and cadmium in biological materials by GFAAS using Escherichia coli as model substance

Abstract: In this work, an analytical method was developed for the determination of lead and cadmium in biological samples using graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. Escherichia coli (E. coli) was chosen as model substance for this purpose as it is readily available in most laboratories and can be quickly and easily prepared with a high turnaround rate. Four different sample preparation methods were initially evaluated with respect to percent recovery, limit of detection, and limit of quantification, and the… Show more

“…The most prevalentelement that occurs naturally is cadmium, which was identified in the early nineteen centuries (Gende and Schmeling 2022). Bivalent, bluishwhite, soft, malleable, and ductile cadmium is highly hazardous to humans and other living things.…”

“…Hence, too much zinc can lead prominent health troubles, such as skin irritations, anemia, stomach cramps, vomiting, and nausea. [9,10] In order to determine trace elements, various analytical methods such as inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), [11] graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry, [12] inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), [13] differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV), [14] electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS), [15] and flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) [16] have been reported. Unlike the other quantification methods, FAAS possesses some benefits such as simplicity, cost-effective, availability, and good precision for determination trace amount of heavy metals.…”
