Development of an experimental apparatus to observe ultrafast phenomena by tender X-ray absorption spectroscopy at PAL-XFEL

Abstract: Understanding the ultrafast dynamics of molecules is of fundamental importance. Time-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy (TR-XAS) is a powerful spectroscopic technique for unveiling the time-dependent structural and electronic information of molecules that has been widely applied in various fields. Herein, the design and technical achievement of a newly developed experimental apparatus for TR-XAS measurements in the tender X-ray range with X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) at the Pohang Accelerator Laborat… Show more

“…The setup has been described in detail elsewhere. [57][58][59] Briefly, the sample was excited with the third harmonic (267 nm) of a Ti:Sa amplified laser system at 60 Hz repetition rate and 100 fs pulse duration (FWHM) of the UV pulses. The round laser focus diameter was 145 µm (1/e 2 ).…”

“…Typically, the TR x-ray scattering experiments are performed at X-ray Scattering and Spectroscopy (XSS) and Nano Crystallography and coherent Imaging (NCI) instruments. Additionally, the PAL-XFEL has the capability to deliver tender x-rays and self-seeded beams with the highest brightness in the world, 108,109 although these experimental conditions are not widely employed for TR x-ray scattering.…”
