Development of Ballasted Ladder Track Equipped with a Vehicle Guide Device

Abstract: The authors proposed a ballasted ladder track equipped with a vehicle guide device to minimize damage in the event of vehicle derailment by a large-scale earthquake. The guide device is joined by a hinge to the outer-gauge side of the longitudinal beams on the track. In this study, the authors verified the load-bearing performance of the vehicle guide device through drop-weight experiments and evaluated its performance and buckling safety by numerical analysis. In addition, ballasted ladder track equipped with… Show more

“…7 has been conducted. The ladder track is made of ladder-shaped composite concrete beams to support rails tied with steel pipes where guards are attached as shown in Fig.7b to prevent wheel deviating from the track even after derailment during a strong earthquake [11][12]. A sinusoidal seismic wave with the maximum acceleration of 4.80 m/sec 2 , the wave number of three, and the frequency of 1Hz was given from the basis of all piers in the transverse direction.…”

“…In Japan, as part of the effort to ensure vehicle running safety during a large-scale earthquake, a variety of studies are being undertaken on guard angles [1] that prevent vehicle derailment and on vehicle guiding devices [2] that prevent derailed vehicles from reaching neighboring lines or completely leaving the track. When developing or implementing such measures, it is important to have a clear understanding of: vehicle behavior during earthquakes, the specific structure of the reinforcement measures, design methods, efficiency, cost/benefit ratio, and order of priority for installation.…”
