“…Some studies have shown that an increase in nitrogen availability suppressed EcM fungi (Nilsson et al 2005(Nilsson et al , 2007 and might have resulted in the dominance of AM fungi (Nilsson et al 2005). A nutrient-based explanation is also supported by field observations in which EcM colonization of oak seedlings was lower at a reclaimed site that had higher levels of nutrients and higher numbers of earthworms than in an unreclaimed site of similar age (soil from which was used for the current study) with lower levels of nutrients and earthworm densities (Frouz et al 2015). Other possible explanations include selective grazing, by earthworms, or greater sensitivity of EcM fungi than AM fungi to earthworm burrowing activity; however, little is known about the interaction between earthworms and EcM fungi.…”
