Development of Characterization Techniques of Thermodynamic and Physical Properties Applied to the CO2-DMSO Mixture

Abstract: International audienceThis work is focused on the development of new characterization techniques of physical and thermodynamic properties. These techniques have been validated using the binary system DMSO-CO2 for which several studies of characterization have been well documented. We focused on the DMSO-rich phase and we carried out measurements of volumetric expansion, density, viscosity and CO2 solubility at 298.15, 308.15 and 313.15 K and pressures up to 9 MPa. The experimental procedures were compared and … Show more

“…The apparatus has been designed to carry out investigations under high pressure and high temperature, respectively up to 35 MPa and 473 K. It is composed of three mains parts: a VLE device, a gravimetric analysis device and a densimeter. A similar device for VLE measurements was used in a previous study dedicated to the development and to the validation of this experimental set-up (Calvignac et al, 2009a).…”

“…A schematic diagram of the experimental device for volumetric expansion measurements is shown in Figure 3. The apparatus (Sitec, Switzerland) has been designed to perform experiments at pressures and temperatures up to, respectively, 50 MPa and 473 K. The experimental procedure has been validated previously (Calvignac et al, 2009a).…”

“…are not sprayed in the precipitation chamber. Indeed, due to the relatively high solubility of DMSO in CO 2 , the DMSO in the lipid mixture can be extracted by CO 2 [32,48] yielding precipitation of curcumin not homogeneously dispersed in the lipids [49]. Curcumin precipitation in the mixer chamber might increase as the curcumin feed ratio in the lipid mixture increases as a consequence of the increased relative partition of DMSO in the CO 2 phase.…”

“…In certain cases, the permanent gas solubility has been reported to even exceed that of the pure gas at the same total pressure, for example, comparing 60 bar O 2 versus the O 2 /CO 2 mixture [25,26]. GXLs also have enhanced transport properties compared to liquid solvents [27][28][29]. Table 1 summarizes a few of the reported enhancements in such physicochemical properties of GXLs.…”
