Development of clinical simultaneous SPECT/MRI

Abstract: There is increasing clinical use of combined positron emission tomography and MRI, but to date there has been no clinical system developed capable of simultaneous single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and MRI. There has been development of preclinical systems, but there are several challenges faced by researchers who are developing a clinical prototype including the need for the system to be compact and stationary with MRI-compatible components. The limited work in this area is described with spec… Show more

“…Son zamanlarda popüler olmaya başlayan mikroSPECT/ mikroMRG sistemlerinde MRG'nin mükemmel yumuşak doku kontrastı ile SPECT'in yüksek rezolüsyonunun bir araya getirilmesi ile daha uzun süreli gözlem imkanı ve onkolojik, immünolojik ve ilaç geliştirme çalışmalarında yeni birtakım yöntemler kullanılmasına imkan bulunmuştur. (6,39). Yüksek rezolüsyon avantajından faydalanabilmek amacıyla PET dedektörü eklenebilen, silikon PMT'lerin kullanıldığı SiPM-MRG/PET (hyperion-IID-a digital-SiPM-based MRG-compatible PET insert) sitemi de hem anatomik hem fonksiyonel bilginin daha detaylı elde edilmesi amacıyla geliştirilen bir modalitedir (40).…”

“…This stationary system has the added advantage of facilitating dynamic acquisition, avoiding the problems of rotation inherent in the conventional SPECT systems. Demonstrating feasibility with a demountable head-only insert [55] may stimulate interest in developing whole-body SPECT/MRI, following a similar development pathway to PET/MRI. The challenges in achieving compatibility with MRI are similar to those encountered in PET/MRI, with the added possibility of introducing eddy currents in the collimator.…”

“…Alternatively, a postreconstruction partial volume correction (PVC) procedure can be used (for reviews, see [83,84]). These techniques are made more accessible by the introduction of multi-modality systems (PET or SPECT combined with CT or MRI), reducing the need for image co-registration (for recent reviews, see [55,[85][86][87]). These techniques also open the door for methods in which PET data are used to improve the quality of MRI images [88].…”

“…20160690). 4 PET has, since its foundation, established itself as an important imaging modality enabling the quantitative assessment of molecular targets in vivo. PET quantification makes it possible to establish a link between the timevarying activity concentration in relevant organs/tissues and the fundamental parameters standing for the biological processes at the cellular level being assessed.…”
