Development of ecomorphology of fishes in Russia

Abstract: SynopsisA brief overview of the origin and application of the ecomorphological concept in Russia is presented : It all started with S.G . Kryzhanovsky at the Severtsov's Laboratory of Comparative Morphology' who studied the respiratory function of embryonic blood circulation (1933) . Later Kryzhanovsky and V V Vasnetsov formulated a theory of qualitative 'etaps' (ontogenetic intervals) in the development of fishes, a theory which their students and collaborators subsequently applied to many different taxa . A… Show more

“…These very important qualities that characterize the development of juveniles in substrate brooding are excellent examples of ecomorphological evolution. Pioneering studies in this field were initiated by Kryzhanowski and other Russian investigators (Smirnov et al, 1995). Development in tilapias can, in fact, be compared to development in altricial and precocial birds: for example, in the order of ploverrelated species, the gulls are altricial and the plovers are precocial.…”

“…This is testified by the large number of comparative ontogenetic and eco-morphological studies carried out in Russia, North America and Europe (e.g. Smirnov et al 1995;Balon 1999;Copp et al 1999). Conversely, in other parts of the world (hence, schools of thought), such as Australasia, only a few studies have relied so far on the AODP framework (Vilizzi 1998a(Vilizzi ,b, 2010Humphries 2005), in spite of advice in favour of this approach (Serafini and Humphries 2002).…”

“…Thus, the role of changing morphology in inducing ontogenetic niche shifts is not always clear (Galis, 1990;Pinder et al, 2005). In this ecomorphological framework, there are three main concerns: (1) the search for a covariation pattern between environmental factors and form, and if found (2) the analysis of this pattern in terms of the functional role and of the performance effects of each morphoanatomical change and (3) the linkage of ecomorphological findings to those of other comparative fields such as ecophysiology, behavioural ecology and evolutionary ecology (Motta & Kotrschal, 1992;Motta et al, 1995a,b;Norton et al, 1995;Smirnov et al, 1995;Xie et al, 2001;Linde et al, 2004;Costa & Cataudella, 2007).…”
