Development of High-Performance Water-Based Mud Formulation Based on Amine Derivatives

Abstract: Many benefits by use of Oil-Based Mud (OBM) in drilling oil and gas wells have been identified in the oil industries worldwide. However the current ever increasing environmental legislations in preventing OBM application in the industries have dictated the use of water-based drilling fluid as the most environmentally acceptable alternative. On the other hand, drilling with water-based systems in shaly formations may cause many problems such as wellbore instability and high torque and drag. Therefore the most o… Show more

“…However, there are some shortcomings with these polymers such as thermal degradation and higher viscosity at high temperatures [12], [13]. Ammonium compounds and its derivatives were used for a long time with some shortcomings, for example, ammonium salts are incompatible with anionic additives [14].…”

“…The traditional and widely used inhibitors include potassium chloride (KCl), polyethylene glycol, potassium polyacrylamide, etc., but they have the problems of insufficient inhibition and impact on the ecological environment. In recent years, researchers have successively proposed some new chemical substances as shale inhibitors, including polyamines, polyether diamines, poly ethoxylated alkyl diamine, hyperbranched polyethylene imines, gelatin, and various plant extracts. ,, They all showed satisfactory performance in terms of inhibition. However, there were some problems such as high toxicity, poor temperature resistance, affecting drilling fluid rheology and fluid loss performance .…”
