Development of hypoparathyroidism animal model and the feasibility of small intestinal submucosa application on the parathyroid autotransplantation

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of small intestinal submucosa (SIS) application on the parathyroid autotransplantation in a rat model of hypoparathyroidism. The rats were divided into four groups: NC (no procedure, n = 5), PTX (total parathyroidectomy, n = 6), PT (total parathyroidectomy and parathyroid autotransplantation, n = 10) and PT + SIS group (total parathyroidectomy and parathyroid autotransplantation with SIS, n = 10). The levels of parathyroid hormone (PTH), calcium, and pho… Show more

“…When combined with our previous report that Normal and Sham rats survived at least 28 days although they received calciumfree diet [18], the present data suggest that PTX combined with calcium-free diet decreased their survival rate dramatically, perhaps owing to the imbalanced calcium homeostasis. Therefore, we next examined the levels of serum iPTH in the surviving experimental rats.…”

“…Following careful incision, we found no red fluorescent spots, indicating that PTX rats had been established successfully (Fig. 4B) [18]. The size of the removed parathyroid glands was 1.1e1.3 mm.…”

“…SIS is an excellent candidate as a drug carrier . Injectable hydrogels are used ubiquitously as cell and drug carriers; thus, we recently prepared an injectable SIS suspension as a cell and drug carrier . This injectable SIS suspension was easily formulated by simply mixing bovine serum albumin and hepatocyte growth factor.…”

“…This surgical technique successfully produced a hypoparathyroidism animal model that was documented by post-operative PTH decreasing rapidly to an undetectable level. [ 5 , 11 ]…”
