Development of Image-enhanced Endoscopy of the Gastrointestinal Tract

Abstract: Endoscopy imaging of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract has evolved tremendously over the last few decades. Key milestones in the development of endoscopy imaging include the use of various dyes for chromoendoscopy, the application of optical magnification in endoscopy, the introduction of high-definition image capturing and display technology and the application of altered illuminating light to achieve vascular and surface enhancement. Aims of this review paper are to summarize the development and evolution of m… Show more

“…The illuminant of endoscope lights the cavity or tract of human body or organs, changes the managements of kinds of diseases, and benefits patients with minimally invasive approaches. Finally, I hope to introduce the appliance of endoscopic and laparoscopic procedures in digestive system via endoscopy and make the examinations and treatments more minimally invasive and effective [33][34][35][36].…”

“…Nasopharyngeal cancer and precancerous lesions are usually difficult to analysis and may pose a challenge for doctors trying to visualize them using standard white light endoscopes. To overcome this, new endoscopic method is developed color spectrum of tumor surface to visualize tumor microvascular patterns called image enhanced endoscopy [4] [5]. It uses optical and/or electronic methods, such as narrow-band imaging (NBI), auto fluorescence imaging (AFI), i-scans, flexible spectral imaging color enhancement (FICE), confocal laser endo microscopy (CLE) and I scan Optical Enhancement (OE) endoscopy.…”

“…Over the years, there is growing interest in developing enhanced imaging approaches based on light–tissue interactions. These approaches have been developed for sensing and elucidating tissue changes at the molecular level and to collect specific data relating to multidimensional changes associated with various tissue states (healthy or disease) . The light‐based technologies can be contrast free, non‐obstrusive, and have negligible effects on the integrity of living tissues.…”
