Development of integrated evolutionary optimization algorithm and its application to optimum design of ship structures

Abstract: This paper proposes an integrated evolutionary optimization algorithm (IEOA) which is combined with genetic algorithm (GA), random tabu search method (TS) and response surface methodology (RSM). This algorithm, in order to improve the convergent speed that is thought to be the demerit of GA, uses RSM and the simplex method. Though mutation of GA offers random variety, systematic variety can be secured through the use of tabu-list. Efficiency of this method has been proven by applying traditional test functions… Show more

“…3 Evolutionary techniques constitute another approach capable of providing high quality designs, as shown in references. [7][8][9][10] These evolutionary alternatives do not require any gradient computation and, in most cases, they are not sensitive to stacking at local optima. Genetic algorithms (GA) have proven effective in high-level optimum search performing and have been widely used to determine the optimum laminate stacking sequence for a laminate subjected to external forces and manufacturing constraints, see references.…”

“…This topic was studied in various fields related to ship building such as hull form design for hydrodynamic performance, 10,11 multidisciplinary objectives 12 and fresh water tank design to avoid local resonance of the hull. 13 Structural static design is also an important topic in design optimization, for example, the optimization of a partial mid-ship structure by Rahman and Caldwell, 14 Kitamura and Uedera 15 and Kitamura et al 16 and the optimization of panel and girder designs by Rahman. 1719 In the context of anti-vibration design, the optimization of the plate thickness of a ship’s hull around the engine room has been reported.…”

“…Optimization techniques offer huge potential for providing automated solutions for complex problems. Upon review of the optimization techniques available in the literature, the genetic algorithm (GA) was selected to stochastically guide the algorithm through the solution space of available designs and to arrive at an evolved one [2][3][4][5][6]. In the literature, the GA is a form of artificial evolution and is a commonly used method for optimization [7][8][9][10][11].…”
