Development of IoT applications in civil engineering classrooms using mobile devices

Abstract: This paper presents academic efforts aimed at integrating methodologies associated with the use of mobile devices, the potential of the Internet of Things (IoT), and the role of experimental education in civil engineering. This integration is developed by encompassing the use of sensors, microcontrollers, civil engineering problems, app development, and fabrication. The proposal provides an explorative way of approaching the numerous possibilities that arise in civil engineering when it comes to IoT, automatio… Show more

“…For the former, students become acquainted with different experimental techniques in construction after a “hands‐on” introduction to the use of sensors, data acquisition systems, and graphical user interfaces. Furthermore, they can transfer the data into a graphical user‐interface, generating a connection from the physical to the virtual world [8,10,11]. For the latter, students treat TLS in manifold applications ranging from surveying to landslides.…”

“…Through giving students a possibility to communicate between devices in a classroom environment, it would be possible to create interesting projects and develop new ideas in the domain of IoT. The key concept is to give participants a variety of communication methods between a set of devices, for example, Bluetooth, Wi‐Fi, GSM or connectivity through commonly used platforms, such as mobile devices .…”

“…For these reasons, student education must be more than just teaching how to use the tools of IoT systems. These should allow students to develop the ability to understand the general configuration of the IoT and to solve problems through the proper use of the tools [29]. In other words, tools for IoT education should be simple and easy to learn, support basic IoT functions, and at the same time ensure usability.…”
