Development of knitted reinforced structures with self-diagnostic function for composite applications

Abstract: The research aims the development of knitted reinforcement structures for inducing self-diagnostic properties into knitted reinforced composites for structural health monitoring. Conductive carbon fiber was used in knitted inlaid structures as inlay yarns, and l × 1 Rib knitted base fabric of polyester filament yarn was used for knitting. The reinforcement’s conductive nature induced self-diagnostic properties into composites using correlation of mechanical damages and changes in electrical resistance values. … Show more

“…Knitting has surpassed weaving as the most widely regarded textile manufacturing process due to its simplicity and comfort characteristics. [7][8][9] Comfort is the foremost desired property in knitwear; however, today's customers are also aware of performance parameters. [10][11][12] Usually attaining comfort parameters successfully is termed as the performance achievement.…”

“…The electrical resistance change method (ERCM) was reported to detect the damage of CFRP. [14][15][16][17][18][19] In previous studies, the ERCM has been used to detect cracking of laminate composites under tensile, 20 compression, 21 and bending. 22,23 Grammatikos and Paipetis 24 found that invisible crack caused the resistance to increase irreversibly under tensile.…”
