Development of light‐induced functionalized asymmetric polysulfone membranes

Abstract: The introduction of functionality into asymmetric polysulfone membranes has widened their applicability. They are modified with acrylic acid with a light‐induced technique. Fourier transform infrared, contact‐angle, porometry, and atomic force microscopy studies have been carried out to characterize the membranes. The performance of the modified membranes has been investigated with permeation measurements. The salt rejection (NaCl and Na2SO4) performance of the modified membranes shows evidence of functionaliz… Show more

“…The detailed mechanism of acrylic acid attachment was described in the literature. 7 Similar results were also observed in the case of the permeation of glucose and sucrose (low molecular weight) through them. The molecular volumes of glucose and sucrose were 190 (a-pyranose) and 279Å 3 , as calculated from the quantum mechanical approach.…”

“…37 The probable mechanism of photoinduced modification was depicted in our earlier experimental study. 29 AA modification was primarily reflected in the weight increase of the modified membranes. The weight increase (range ¼ 10 À7 mol/cm 2 ) depended on the AA concentration.…”

“…The arrangements were already described in our previous publication. 29 Immobilization of lipase on the membranes with Hz PS-g-AA membranes were used for the surface covalent binding of lipases. The PS-g-AA membranes were first acid-methylated and then activated by acyl azide formation.…”

“…The AFM images of polyethylene glycol methacrylate (PEGMA) and sulfopropyl methacylate (SPM) grafted BW -30 commercial reverse osmosis (RO) membranes [22] are shown below (Figure 4.18 ). With the grafting, the roughness parameter is interestingly decreased [22,23] (of course it depends upon the roughness of virgin membrane).…”
