Development of Hydrotaea aenescens (Diptera: Muscidae) in Manure of Unweaned Dairy Calves and Lactating Cows

Abstract: In laboratory studies performed in the United States and Hungary, the dump fly Hydrotaea aenescens (Wiedemann) was reared successfully in manure of 1- to 8-wk-old dairy calves, and in manure from adult lactating dairy cows. Survival in manure collected from 1-wk-old calves was poor (7.2%), better in manure collected from 2- and 3-wk-old calves (53.5%), and best in manure collected from 4- to 8-wk-old calves (71.4%). Survival in cow manure was slightly lower (47.4%) than that in calf manure. Reasons for differe… Show more

“…In diets poor in nutrients such as carbohydrate-rich ones the biomass was very low compared to diets rich in protein. Another factor that may influence the measurements of weight and size is the amount of moisture, as observed by Hogsette et al (2002).…”

“…The adults were fed with a diet composed of milk powder, sugar and fish meal, in a ratio of 2:2:1, respectively. The diets were modified by Ribeiro et al (2000a) and Krüger et al (2004) from Hogsette and Koehler (1992) and Hogsette et al (2002) that used Gainesville and Budapest diets. The O. aenescens and O. albuquerquei larvae were fed according to Ribeiro et al (2000b) and Kruger et al (2003) modified from Hogsette and Washington (1995) and Farkas et al (1998), who used Gainesville and Budapest diets for larvae.…”

“…(formerly Ophyra sp.) are facultative predators of other dipteran larvae, especially the larvae of M. domestica (Geden et al , 1988; Farkas et al , 1998; Hogsette et al , 2002), and were probably found exclusively in 2-week-old waste due to the abundance of their prey. Gravid female houseflies have been known to release chemical signals (semiochemicals) that attract other females to oviposit in common egg-laying sites (Jiang et al , 2002).…”

“…This species was not recorded from the garbage sampled in Churchill by Webb (1956). However, Hydrotaea aenescens might not be able to overwinter in the wild in Churchill (Hogsette et al 2002), and the storage of garbage (including recycling and compost) in a specialized building since 2004 (Eliasson 2004) may have provided warmer conditions favourable to the establishment of this species. The dump fly was also collected, along with Hydrotaea cristata Malloch, on rotting grain piles at the occasional sites.…”
