Development of Magnetic-Particle Testing Magnetizer for Generation of Uniform Rotating Magnetic Field in Wide Area

Abstract: The maximum magnetic flux leakage from a crack is obtained when the direction of the magnetic flux is orthogonal to the longitudinal direction of the crack. In magnetic-particle testing with a yoke method, since we usually cannot predict the direction of the crack to be detected, it is necessary to perform the testing at least two times by changing the direction of magnetization. In a rotating magnetic field type magnetizer using three-pole coils (three-phase alternating current), omnidirectional crack can be … Show more

“…In this magnetizer, three-phase ac current with a phase shift of 120 • is applied to three pole coils to produce 2D rotating magnetic field. In addition, aiming at a wider region of uniform rotating magnetic field, we proposed a split-coil type magnetizer with magnetic poles split in three pole coils, 7 and a multicoil type magnetizer with the number of poles increased to six. 8 We confirmed that in the multi-coil type magnetizer with more poles, magnetic flux was distributed omnidirectionally in a wide range inside the magnetizer, and that the region of uniform flux density expanded.…”

“…However, it is easier with a three-pole magnetizer. Fukuoka et al [8] have succeeded in generating magnetic fields in all directions with a three-pole magnetizer for magnetic-particle testing. Therefore, in this study, we attempted to construct a BN measurement system using a three-pole magnetizer.…”
