“…An early diagnosis of seedlings' sexuality is of paramount importance and would help in reducing breeder resources of labour, field space, time and others. In recent years, many studies have been focused on marker-assisted selection (MAS) for early plant sexual diagnosis, such as in pistachio (Hormaza et al 1994), Actinidia (Gill et al 1998), papaya (Deputy et al 2002), hemp (Peil et al 2003), Rumex nivalis (Stehlik and Blattner 2004), spiny gourd (Panigrahi and Mishra 2012), date palm (Dhawan et al 2013) and Jojoba (Heikrujam et al 2014). It is necessary to develop MAS, a rapid technique, to genotype persimmon sexuality in breeding programmes for two scenarios: (i) germplasm selection (a commercial genotype with male flowers is an undesirable trait) and (ii) crosses in conventional breeding (early sex diagnosis of persimmon seedlings would save labour and land resources and dramatically improve breeding).…”

“…Out of 254 numbers of detected microsatellite loci, 22 were found to identify 75% male samples of date palm. Later on, Dhawan et al (2013) screened 100 RAPD primers and 104 ISSR primers for sex determination in date palm and identified single RAPD (OPA-02) primer amplifying about 1.0 kb DNA band only from the DNA samples of the male date palms. By cloning and sequencing of that RAPD band, they designed SCAR primer pair for assured sex differentiation of date palm which amplified a 406 bp amplicon in both male and female plants and a 354 bp fragment in males only.…”

“…In comparison, molecular diagnosis (if available/feasible) promises quick and reliable identification of sex types very early when plantlets are growing in seedbeds. To develop such an assay, genomic DNA from 45 individual plants (25 female and 20 male) belonging to different varieties of date palm was subjected to PCR amplification using 100 RAPD and 104 ISSR (Dhawan et al, 2013). In papaya identification of female and hermaphrodite specific marker papaya sex determination by RAPD (Diwedi et al, 2014).…”
