Development of Material‐Integrated Actuator‐Sensor‐Arrays for Obstacle Sensing

Abstract: The specific manufacturing processes of fiber‐reinforced plastics (FRP) enable a seamless integration of sensors and actuators, allowing realization of tasks that are additional to the main load bearing functionality, for example, obstacle distance sensing. Through the integration of several distributed piezoelectric actuators into a FRP component and their time‐shifted actuation, a directional plate wave can be generated. The interaction of the plate wave with the surrounding medium induces a sound wave, whic… Show more

“…A proximity sensor can detect the object with no requirement of any physical contact and therefore is expected to be used in robotics, artificial intelligence, and human–machine interaction . In theory, proximity sensing can be realized based on any long-range interactions, such as electrostatic , and magnetic inductions, ultrasonic action, and optical detection . Here, the proximity sensing is developed with the help of the electrostatic interaction between an object and the extended gate of the organic transistor.…”

“…Another example for the functionalization of load‐bearing structures is the use of integrated piezoelectric transducer arrays for ultrasonic measurement systems . Such active fiber‐reinforced composites can be used, e.g., for structure integrated distance measurement or flow measurement systems , . Within the collaborative research center CRC/TR39, a demonstrator was built (see Fig.…”

“…Among various kinds of somatosensory system components, sensors that possess the ability of noncontact proximity perception are promising candidates for future applications in intelligent robotics. The mechanism of proximity sensors is mostly based on electrostatic induction, ultrasound, triboelectric effect, magnetic field, optical imaging, etc. By avoiding unnecessary physical contact, proximity sensors are helpful in detecting the surroundings, lowering the risk of possible collision, and avoiding potential damage to devices.…”
