Development of Mox Ruy Sez (CO)n electrocatalysts by screen printing and sintering for fuel cell applications

Abstract: Electrocatalysts based on molybdenum, ruthenium, and selenium were prepared by screen printing Ru3 (CO)12 + Se and Ru3 (CO)12 + Mo(CO)6 + Se mixtures and subsequent sintering at 250°C in air or Se atmosphere in a tubular furnace. The catalysts were characterised using techniques such as XRD, SEM, TEM, voltammetry, and polarisation (current–potential) measurements. The results indicate that screen printed Rux Sey (CO)n and Mox Ruy Sez (CO)n are near amorphous in nature and possess appreciable catalytic activity… Show more

“…An ongoing strategy in our group is to develop materials in a nanodivided form using carbonyl based metal molecular clusters as precursors [24]. Neutral metal carbonyls of osmium, ruthenium, tungsten, iron and molybdenum have been employed by other authors to synthesize cathode materials based on one- [25-27, 29, 33, 34, 39-43, 46] or two-metal [28,[30][31][32][35][36][37][38] centered clusters with selenium or sulphur, using the same chemical route proposed by the current author [24,[49][50][51][52]. Although, the feasibility has been demonstrated, the nature of the catalyst materials, from a composition and structural point of view, has been poorly described.…”

“…Using the flow chart schematized in Figure 7.22 as a synthesis basis, other groups report chalcogenide materials in which CO is still involved as a ligand in, for example, Ru x Fe y Se z (CO) n , Mo x Ru y Se z (CO) n , W-Se-Os(CO) n , Mo x S y (CO) n , Mo x Se y (CO) n or W(CO) n [121][122][123][124][125][126][127][128][129][130][131][132][133][134][135][136]. These descriptive stoichiometries are most probably the result of an incomplete reaction of pyrolysis of the reactants, and make the understanding of the role of the catalytic sites of cathode materials rather difficult.…”
