Development of multi-physics code systems based on the reactor dynamics code DYN3D

Abstract: The reactor dynamics code DYN3D has been coupled with the CFD code ANSYS CFX and the 3D thermal hydraulic core model FLICA4. In the coupling with ANSYS CFX, DYN3D calculates the neutron kinetics and the fuel behavior including the heat transfer to the coolant. The physical data interface between the codes is the volumetric heat release rate into the coolant. In the coupling with FLICA4 only the neutron kinetics module of DYN3D is used. Fluid dynamics and related transport phenomena in the reactor's coolant and… Show more

“…The DYN3D code has already been coupled to the CFD code ANSYS CFX (Kliem et al, 2011b) and to the thermal-hydraulics system codes ATHLET and RELAP5 (Kliem et al, 2007;Grundmann and Kliem, 2003). The experience obtained in these activities was used to conduct the coupling with FLICA4 in an efficient way.…”

“…Furthermore, a typical end-of-cycle (EOC) power distribution was assumed in the core. For this purpose, the nodal power distribution was implemented into the CFD model as obtained from a stationary full-core calculation with the neutron kinetics code DYN3D for a generic Pre-Konvoi core loading pattern [2].…”

“…The range of DYN3D applicability is greatly extended by multi-physics coupling with system codes such as ATHLET (Grundmann et al, 1995) and RELAP (Kozmenkov et al, 2007), CFD code ANSYS CFX and FLICA4 (Kliem et al, 2011), sub-channel thermal hydraulics SUBCHANFLOW (Gomez-Torres et al, 2012) and fuel performance code TRANSURANUS (Holt et al, 2015).…”
