Development of Novel Robust Regulator for Maximum Wind Energy Extraction Based upon Perturbation and Observation

Abstract: This paper develops a robust regulator design approach to maximum power point tracking (MPPT) of a variable-speed wind energy conversion system (WECS) under the concept of perturbation and observation. The proposed perturb and observe regulators (PORs) rooted on the sliding mode method employs the optimal power curve (OPC) to realize MPPT operations by continuously adjusting rotor speeds and the duty cycles, which can ensure control performance against system parameter variations. The proposed PORs can detect … Show more

“…The wind's renewable nature and abundance make it a good candidate for providing energy on a large scale, although it is difficult to accurately predict it because of the many factors on which it depends. Hence, aerodynamic study for wind power capture [8], electric generators and power converters design [9][10][11], system control and energy generation optimization [12][13][14] are just a few examples of the challenges that still face engineers and researchers.…”

“…The combination of this algorithm with a solar tracker provided suitable results. Due to its properties, it has also been used in assorted renewable systems such as wave energy generators [13], PV based microgrids [14], wind generators [15], and so forth. Despite its robustness and practicality, the downsides of P&O are related to the generated perturbations or partial shadow cases, which can produce, respectively, oscillations around the MPP or fall to a local maximum, which produces a reduction in accuracy [16,17].…”
