Development of phosphoryl-functionalized algal-PEI beads for the sorption of Nd(III) and Mo(VI) from aqueous solutions – Application for rare earth recovery from acid leachates

Abstract: Alginate-PEI beads are functionalized by phosphorylation and applied for the sorption of Nd(III) and Mo(VI). The successful grafting of phosphoryl groups (as tributyl phosphate derivative) is characterized by FTIR and XPS analysis, elemental analysis, titration (pH PZC ), TGA, BET and SEM-EDX analyses. The multi-functional characteristics of the sorbent (i.e., carboxylic, hydroxyl, amine and phosphate groups) contribute in the binding of metal ions having different physicochemical behaviors. The sorption of Nd… Show more

“…whereas the peak at 1030 cm –1 matched the Mg–OH stretching [ 73 ] with C-H out-of-plane bend. The peak located at 930 cm –1 corresponds to C-O stretching, trans -C-H out-of-plane bend, and P–O which refers to phosphate-containing molecules [ 74 ]. The successful fabrication of Mg-O was confirmed by peaks observed at a wavenumber between 400 to 700 cm –1 , as reported in various published studies [ 69 , 75 , 76 ].…”

“…The presence of these reactive groups also allows for readily functionalizing the sorbent by activation of amine groups. Hence, a series of sorbents functionalized with amidoxime groups [ 44 ], quaternary ammonium groups [ 47 ], sulfonic groups [ 48 ] and phosphoryl groups [ 49 ] have been designed. Studies confirm the contribution of several groups on multifunctional sorbents in the recovery of selected metal ions (uranyl ions, metalloid anions, and members of the REE family).…”

“…Therefore, some of the initiatives taken have been aborted in the EU and North America following the rapid lowering of market prices and consequent non-cost effectiveness. However, with increasing prices and better available process technologies, new initiatives are emerging [31,32].…”
