Development of ROS-TMS 5.0 for informationally structured environment

Abstract: An informationally structured environment (ISE) is a key technology for realizing service robots in daily life in the near future. In ISE, the information of the service robot and its surroundings is structured and provided to the robot on time and on demand. We started the development of a management system for ISE named TMS (Town Management System) in Robot Town Project in 2005. Since then we are continuing our efforts for the improvement of the performance and the enhancement of the functions of TMS. In thi… Show more

“…In the future, we intend to improve the stability of the developed tour guide robot system by combining sensors including not only on-board sensors, such as 2D LiDAR and cameras, but also ambient sensors embedded based on the concept of the informationally structured environment [12]. In addition, pedestrian detection and tracking are also important functions for a safe and efficient autonomous robot system, and we intend to implement these functions and develop a practical tour guide robot system.…”

“…In particular, due to the rapid development of communication technology, various systems for conducting service tasks using robots over networks have been constructed [10][11][12]. Regarding communication technology, 5G is being developed and introduced as a next-generation wireless communication technology that enables large-capacity data to be handled by wireless communication.…”

“…Figure 12 shows images of the user's viewpoint and the actual robot motion. The user asks the ROS-TMS to allow a robot to bring him/her a snack by a voice command [13]. The ROS-TMS then starts to make a motion plan for a service robot.…”

“…We have been developing a software platform named the ROS-Town Management System (ROS-TMS) [1] for the ISE [2,3]. ROS-TMS consists of several hierarchical layers that have functions for the control system of robots and sensors: the understanding of sensory information, task planning and execution, human interfaces, and a database.…”
