Development of Sensor Integrated Composite Wing Structure

Abstract: Demands for improved aerial vehicle performance have led to the increasing use of composite materials. However, the mechanical behavior and failure modes of composites are not characterized as well as metals, and damages may be more difficult to detect. To overcome this, there is a demand to develop a structural health monitoring (SHM) system for composite aerial vehicles. This paper presents the development of sensor integrated composite wing structure, which is an essential part of SHM system. The composite … Show more

“…Aktaş et al (2009) studied the detection of damage produced by impacts of different energies including results from infrared thermography and a final autopsy. Park et al (2010) and Choi et al (2010) implemented an FBG sensor network for damage monitoring and compared the strain measured by FBGs, piezoelectric active sensors, and q-switch pulsed lasers. García et al (2015) presented several practical applications for structures and engines with different alternatives for measuring strains.…”

“…The limitation of a low sampling frequency was overcome using the newly developed FBG interrogation system based on spectral domain measurements . To increase the applicability of the impact identification methods, the impact experiments in this study were performed on various types of composite structures such as a composite flat plate, a composite stiffened panel and a full scale UAV composite wing box . In this case, the low signal‐to‐noise ratios of the FBG sensor signals disturb to obtain the reproducible arrival times as the neural network input data.…”
