Development of separated elastic stockings

Abstract: Modified separated elastic stockings are easier to put on and take off compared with current non-separated stockings, and they can be used safely because of their low-level shift during daily activities.

“…10 Donning difficulties account for most failures. 10 Basically, four methods of overcoming this major obstacle have been proposed: (a) the use of donning devices; 11 (b) the use of moldable superimposed Velcro wraps; 17 (c) the use of a divided compression stocking composed of a sock and a Compression Stocking Kit separate legging; 13 and (d) the use of superimposed light stockings. 12 The present study demonstrates that a modular leg compression kit composed of a light understocking and several leggings is easier to don under "real-world" conditions than a strong compression stocking of 40 mmHg resting pressure at level B.…”

“…11 Another recently presented solution is to divide the stocking at the ankle region into one part covering the foot and one part covering the lower leg with overlap in the ankle region. 13 Further stocking kits composed of an understocking and a compressive legging are available for long distance running.…”

“…7,1820 In order to reduce these shortcomings, some measures are adopted such as techniques for applying double stockings, in which one stocking is applied over the other, the combined use of bandages with the elastic stockings, separated elastic stockings, in which the elastic stockings are separated at the ankle region into two parts, leg and foot portions, and the application of pads or gaiters. 16,2022 In our previous study, 23 a significant increase in the pressure difference between muscle contraction and relaxation during exercise was observed with local compression at the calf by pads placed under the elastic stockings. Of these techniques, leg gaiters have a marked advantage in that they can be easily put on and taken off, facilitating temporary use when needed such as on walking and gymnastics.…”

“…23 This high negative pressure gradient may result in a tourniquet effect such as oedema, pain or deep vein thrombosis at more distal regions due to disturbance of venous return. 2527 However, from our previous study including the interface pressure measurement of various joint- or muscle-supporters for leg pain, 20 we consider that a tourniquet effect rarely occurs if the pressure difference is 10 mmHg or less, even if the compression pressure of the distal part is higher than that of the proximal part in the two adjoining parts. In the present study, as the gaiters were applied closely to the calf without extra tension, the interface pressure under the gaiters at the calf was less than 10 mmHg.…”

“…34 This is partially due to difficulty in application. 35,36 Varicose veins lead to increased leg volume, 37 and physiological assessment has shown a significant reduction in leg volume with compression hosiery, with varicose vein patients benefiting more with higher compression levels. 38 Post ulceration there is significant evidence that long-term use of compression hosiery reduces recurrence by half, 39 in addition to aiding healing of those ulcers.…”
