Development of short-form measures to assess four types of elder mistreatment: Findings from an evidence-based study of APS elder abuse substantiation decisions

Abstract: Improving the standardization and efficiency of adult protective services (APS) investigations is a top priority in APS practice. Using data from the Elder Abuse Decision Support System (EADSS), we developed short-form measures of four types of elder abuse: financial, emotional/psychological, physical, and neglect. The EADSS data set contains 948 elder abuse cases (age 60+) with yes/no abuse substantiation decisions for each abuse type following a 30-day investigation. Item sensitivity/specificity analyses wer… Show more

“…Additionally, even though future harm can be modeled statistically using standardized data, it requires longitudinal data collection beyond the scope of this study. Since 45% of APS clients return to APS (Aurelien et al, 2019), future studies should examine why and who returns to APS to model future harm. Clients returning to APS sometimes indicate their willingness to seek help, so instead of always viewing reoccurrence as a negative outcome, the focus should be on reasons for returning to APS.…”

“…(5,8,9) In addition, the current state of knowledge in nursing science suggests that about 10% of the elderly population are victims of elder abuse annually. (3,10,11) Much attention has been given to depression among the elderly in terms of their health status and their quality of life. Depression can contribute to many physical problems in the aged population and can limit their daily activities.…”

“…To my knowledge, no study has been conducted to compare elder abuse by type in South Korea, although there are a few international studies related to types of elder abuse. (10,14,15) However, one was a study constructing a measurement tool, (10) and the other two were studies on types of prevalent elder abuse in western countries. (14,15) Hence, the current study fills a gap in our knowledge.…”

“…Although EM screening/assessment instruments have been developed to indicate the presence of abuse/neglect (Beach et al, 2017;Gallione et al, 2017), the field lacks tools that measure the extent of case resolution over the course of intervention. Without a way to measure change in client or case status in response to the intervention, EM research cannot systematically compare the effectiveness of different intervention models.…”
