Development of Slag Base for Welding Fluxes from Man-Made Mineral Formations of Ural Mining and Smelting Companies

Abstract: Slag bases for welding materials have been developed from mineral raw materials and man–made mineral formations of the Urals. Successful comprehensive studies and tests of fused fluxes and also of weld metal and weld joints obtained by these welding materials have been carried out. It has been clearly established that the obtained weld metal has low content of harmful impurities ([S] is as low as 0.01 wt%) due to the use of the electric arc furnace method, purity of the feedstock minerals and technogenic raw m… Show more

“…Studying the methods for welding fluxes production and modern technologies for improving their quality [14], the authors of the article decided to develop technological foundations and recommendations for granulation processes of mineral raw materials batch using plasma electric arc for fused welding fluxes production. In this work it is necessary to research the impact of a highly concentrated heat source on mineral raw materials batch that is melted in a short time into drops that form granules of fused welding flux of required morphology, structure and composition during crystallization under surface tension forces (spheroidizing [15]) in weightlessness (falling) state.…”

“…It is found that spherical shape granules have porous surface (Fig 2, b), with fraction composition from 0.5 mm to 2.5 mm (6-10% of the total weight of granular rock furnace burden) [19,20]. In addition, during the granulation, up to 5% of the volume is a generated fused slag because of rock furnace burden falling on the ends of electrodes, and it is already granulated by "dry" method.…”
