Development of Spoken Language User Interfaces: A Tool Kit Approach

Abstract: This paper introduces a toolkit that allows programmers with no linguistic knowledge to rapidly develop a Spoken Language User Interface (SLUI) for various applications. The applications may vary from web-based e-commerce to the control of domestic appliances. Using the SLUI Toolkit, a programmer is able to create a system that incorporates Natural Language Processing (NLP), complex syntactic parsing, and semantic understanding. The system has been tested using ten human evaluators in a specific domain of a we… Show more

“…Performing a requisite literature review for related studies remains a labor-intensive task requiring personnel with specific knowledge who can interpret the framework, criteria, and results of prior clinical trials. Future protocol development will benefit from the use of artificial intelligence tools, such as natural language processing [ 2 , 17 , 32 , 53 ], which will be able to extract meaningful information across published documents and present systematically organized data to the study designer for consideration. Still, the study designer must think through the implications of different inclusion/exclusion criteria (as well as objectives and endpoints) and the effects they will have on recruitment, enrollment, retention, and ultimately time and cost to completion.…”

“…The main goals of this study are as follows: (1) identify and extract DEI (document entity information); (2) locate, extract, and modify the four financial tables (Income statement, Cash Flow, Balance Sheet, and Stockholders' Equity); (3) extract and present parenthetical information from the four financials in a tabular format; and (4) extract financial Notes. Please note that for the present study we do not delve into tagging or detailed notes tagging.…”
