Development of the burden expression suppression questionnaire for Japanese

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to develop a new questionnaire to assess the burden expressive suppression for Japanese (J-BES) based on the BES by Niermeyer, Franchow & Suchy (2016). In this study 1, 465 upper-middle and older adults filled 20 questionnaire items and two factors, social suppression and personal suppression, were identified by the factor analysis and selected 8 items as J-BES. “…However, it enables us to compare our results to the findings from previous studies. Moreover, verbal fluency has been shown to decline rapidly in old age (e.g., Clark et al, 2009;Hatta et al, 2020). Therefore, using verbal fluency as a measure of cognitive processing enables us to link a potential longitudinal decline in elderly adults' language processing abilities to their level of cognitive processing.…”

“…This developmental effort was prompted by links between EF deficits and psychiatric disorders, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, depression, and schizophrenia (Diamond, 2013; Snyder et al, 2015). However, there is need for brief assessment of EF because one cannot take a long time to evaluate clients due to the lack of specialists, for example, in Japan, the position of professional neuropsychologist has yet to be established solidly in clinical settings (Hatta et al, 2018). Similar demand also exists in basic psychology fields.…”
