Development of the camera for the large size telescopes of the Cherenkov Telescope Array

Abstract: The Large Size Telescopes, LSTs, located at the center of the Cherenkov Telescope Array, CTA, will be sensitive for low energy gamma-rays. The camera on the LST focal plane is optimized to detect low energy events based on a high photon detection efficiency and high speed electronics. Also the trigger system is designed to detect low energy showers as much as possible. In addition, the camera is required to work stably without maintenance in a few tens of years. In this contribution we present the design of th… Show more

“…light stimulated by the development of the atmospheric shower of particles occurring when a gamma-ray photon enters the atmosphere. This emitted light is collected by a mirror, and captured by a specific ultra-fast and very sensitive optical camera [1]. Gamma-ray-initiated showers then appear as roughly elliptical images on the camera plane.…”

“…We discuss the findings of the previous sections in Section 9 and draw conclusions in Section 10. (Canestrari et al 2013;Aguilar et al 2014;Ambrosi 2014;Inome et al 2014;Schlenstedt 2014;Catalano et al 2014;Glicenstein et al 2014;Puehlhofer et al 2015;Rulten et al 2016;Glicenstein and Shayduk, M. for the NectarCam Collaboration and the CTA Consortium 2017; Mazin et al 2017;Sol et al 2017;White, Richard and Schoorlemmer, Harm 2017;Samarai et al 2017). The geometrical mirror area has been corrected for the effect of shadowing by the camera or the secondary mirror for the case of the Schwarzschild-Couder design for on-axis incidence of light, but not for camera support structures and other material elements, like e.g.…”
