Development of the EuCARD $\hbox{Nb}_{3}\hbox{Sn}$ Dipole Magnet FRESCA2

Abstract: The key objective of the Superconducting High Field Magnet work package of the European Project EuCARD, and specifically of the High Field Model task, is to design and fabricate the Nb3Sn dipole magnet FRESCA2. With an aperture of 100 mm and a target bore field of 13 T, the magnet is aimed at upgrading the FRESCA cable test facility at CERN. The design features four 1.5 m long double-layer coils wound with a 21 mm wide cable. The windings are contained in a support structure based on a 65 mm thick aluminum she… Show more

“…This 1.5 m long dipole called FRESCA2 will be used to upgrade the FRESCA test facility at CERN, fulfilling the need to qualify conductor at higher fields. Following the description in detail about the design of this magnet in [3], the present paper summarizes the status of the mechanical characterization of the FRESCA2 support structure; describing the first assembly and pre-loading with Al dummy coils. Strain gauge data measurements were obtained at all stages then compared with expected stress values issued from Ansys calculations.…”

“…This programme builds upon the experience of a previous FP7 project, called EuCARD-WP7 "High Field Magnets" [16] which had the primary goal to design and build a large bore 13 T dipole in Nb3Sn, called Fresca2 [17], with accelerator magnets technology, to be eventually used as background field for a large current (> 30 kA) high field cable test facility. EuCARD-WP7 contained also a task on the design and construction of a 6 T HTS insert for Fresca2 [18].…”

“…The insert will eventually be inserted inside a 100-mmdiameter aperture Nb3Sn magnet with a 13 T central field at 4.2 K, called FRESCA2 [10], to increase its field by about 2.5 T. The magnet will be wound with a 10 kA class Roebel cable which is a continuously transposed cable [11]. The Roebel cable assembly will be made at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology with RE-BCO tapes to be provided by Bruker HTS [12].…”
