Development of the first Tesla class iron-based superconducting coil for high field application

Hangwei Ding,
Hang Zhao,
Pengcheng Huang
et al.

Abstract: This study has, for the first time, combined iron-based superconductor (IBS) with high field insert coil technology to generate a higher magnetic field. Nine large-sized iron-based superconducting double pancake coils were fabricated and their performance was evaluated at 4.2 K. Subsequently, seven double pancake coils with superior performance were assembled to form an IBS insert coil and tested at the 20T background field. The test results indicate that the insert coil successfully generated above 1T magneti… Show more

“…Moreover, the high-performance 100 m-long tape has already been fabricated and applied in prototypes of iron-based pancake coils and racetrack coils [13][14][15]. Notably, the stacked pancake coils generated a tesla class field at a background field of 20 T, indicating the competitive potential of IBSs for highfield applications [16].…”

“…In the Letter by Ding et al [14], the successful generation of magnetic field of over 1 T using 7-filamentary Ag/AgSn double-sheathed (Ba,K)Fe 2 As 2 superconducting tapes with a total length over 350 m is reported. Although the magnetic field of 1 T is by no means high enough, it can be an entry point for high-field magnets since it is not easy to generate it using conventional conductors.…”
