Development of the HELIUS food frequency questionnaires: ethnic-specific questionnaires to assess the diet of a multiethnic population in The Netherlands

Abstract: The developed FFQs will enable standardised and comparable assessment of the diet of five different ethnic groups and provide insight into the role of diet in differences in health between ethnic groups. The methodology described in this paper and the choices made during the development phase may be useful in developing similar FFQs in other settings.

“…Also, clear ethnic differences in the disease-specific dietary patterns were observed between the 2 Surinamese groups, although their diet was assessed by using the same FFQ. The 4 ethnicity-specific FFQs were developed with the aim of conducting comparable analyses with the use of standardized methodology, the same layout, and comparable food items (21). Third, the response rate differed significantly across ethnic groups (ranging from 23.7% in Turkish-to 72.5% in Dutch-origin participants).…”

“…Dietary intake was collected by either selfadministered or interview-based ethnicity-specific FFQ. Detailed information on the development of the ethnicity-specific FFQs has been published (21). In brief, an existing Dutch FFQ to assess dietary intake in the Dutch-origin population was adapted to form the basis for new comparable FFQs, specifically assessing habitual dietary intake in the ethnic minority populations.…”

“…6 for a flow-chart). A food frequency questionnaire based on validated measurement tools is used to measure the fruit, vegetable and snack intake [6971]. An adapted version of the Short Questionnaire to Assess Health-enhancing Physical Activity (SQUASH) will be used to measure PA [72].…”
