Development of the Japanese Version of the Leeds Assessment of the Neuropathic Symptoms and Signs Pain Scale: Diagnostic Utility in a Clinical Setting

Abstract: The LANSS-J is a valid screening tool for detecting neuropathic pain. Our results suggest that employing the original cutoff value provides high specificity, although a lower cutoff value of 10 or 11 (with its high specificity maintained) may be more beneficial when pain attributed to neuropathic mechanisms is suspected in Japanese patients.

“…Based on these characteristics of neuropathic pain, multiple screening tools have been developed to easily evaluate the possibility that a patient has neuropathic pain in routine medical practice. There are tools known as the Japanese neuropathic pain screening questionnaire [ 18 ], PainDETECT Japanese version [ 10 ], and Leeds assessment of neuropathic symptoms and signs (LANSS) Japanese version [ 19 ] developed in Japan. All of these are just screening tools for neuropathic pain in general clinical settings, and these demonstrate high sensitivity but moderate specificity.…”
