Since entering the 21st century, we have been facing a globally urgent need for all nations, without exception, to deal with environmental concerns such as global warming and energy issues arising from the depletion of fossil fuels. As a countermeasure, next-generation vehicles for a recycling-based society that are energy-efficient, compact, light, low-cost and reliable need to spread in the society. In this study, we will explain the basic philosophy of how to approach next-generation energy-saving technologies for automobiles, the current status and technological issues of internal combustion engines (ICE), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), electric vehicles (EVs), and fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) with the latest examples. 

A Turbocharged diesel engine dominated Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) is proposed. In order to achieve good fuel economy and low emissions performance, a cost function which is the function of fuel economy and emissions is defined and the Optimal Operation Line (OOL) of engine is determined through selecting the minimal value of the cost function. The Baseline Based Fuzzy Logic Control strategy (BL-FLC) presented here can optimize both the fuel economy and emissions by making this Compress-Ignition Direct-Injection (CIDI) engine work at or nearits OOL all the time. Also, a baseline control strategy is presented with simulation results. Compared with baseline control strategy, the BL-FLC presented in this paper can obtain 11.7% decrease in fuel consumption on the given drive cycle without sacrificing dynamic performance.

In the twenty-first century, rapid advances are being made in the electric propulsion of vehicles as a countermeasure of global warming. In addition, CO 2 emissions from all vehicles are to be stringently regulated to 95 g/km by 2020. Thus, most automakers around the world have had to develop not only hybrid electric vehicles, but also conventional internal combustion engine with energy-saving technology. Battery technology (Li-ion) and semiconductor technology (SiC and GaN) for automotive power supply systems have proceeded to the mass-production stage. In 2011, Verband der Automobilindustrie (German OEMs and suppliers) announced the adoption of DC 48 V for the market of 2020. In this paper, we analyze the needs and impact of DC 48 V and compare it with DC 42 V (current technology). We also try to portray the future view under DC 60 V for automotive power supply systems.
