Aiming at the problems of long reaction time and the risk of explosion polymerization of acrylate resin, a small amount of ferrocene (Fc) is added to the existing dibenzoyl peroxide (BPO)/N,N‐dimethylaniline (DMA) initiators, and the compound redox initiators (BPO/DMA/ (Fc)) are proposed for acrylate resin polymerization at room temperature. The effect of the content of Fc in the resin on the reaction efficiency and the molding quality of products is researched, and the initiation mechanism of the compound redox initiators is analyzed. It is found that with the addition of Fc, the reaction time of the resin can be shortened by 68% at maximum, the heat release temperature of the resin can be reduced by 40% at maximum, the molecular weight of the reaction products can be increased by 74% at maximum, the tensile and bending properties of the resin castings are increased by 23% and 35% at maximum, respectively, and the bending strength and bending modulus are increased by 57% and 27% at maximum, respectively. The compound redox initiators proposed in this paper can improve the molding efficiency and quality of the product, lay a foundation for the application of acrylic resin in the field of pultrusion molding, perfusion molding, and other in situ molding of thermoplastic composites.

In this research, blends are prepared of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), ground tire rubber (GTR) and its devulcanized version (dGTR). The primary objective is to produce thermoplastic elastomers wherein TPU is partially substituted by GTR or dGTR obtained from used tires, thereby forming a blend with a favorable cost/value ratio and a smaller environmental footprint. Throughout the experiment, the rubber content of the blends is varied between 0 and 50 wt% and the effect on mechanical properties is investigated. The blends are compounded with a twin‐screw extruder, after which sheet samples are produced by injection molding. With a view to a possible future industrial application, it is important that both the compounding and the injection molding of the specimens are easy to perform, even with a 50 wt% filler content. Increasing the amount of rubber phase reduce the tensile strength and elongation at break of the blends. Unfortunately, devulcanization did not significantly improve the properties of the blends. Overall, even at a (d)GTR content of 50 wt%, an elongation at break of 300% is achieved, which allows the use of the blends as thermoplastic elastomers. In addition, dynamic tests show that the rubber phase increases the damping capacity of the samples.

Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)/silicone rubber (SR) thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs) are considering to be a promising material for smart wearable technologies due to its low temperature and high temperature resistance and biological affinity. However, the poor compatibility between TPU and SR phases limits its practical application. In this paper, TPU/SR TPVs were prepared through dynamic vulcanization and zinc dimethacrylate (ZDMA) was used to improve the interface between TPU and SR phases. FTIR results and theoretical calculation showed that complex reactions including the graft‐polymerization of ZDMA occurred onto the main chains of TPU and SR in the presence of peroxides to form a strong interface and improve the compatibility. Dynamic mechanical analysis implied the difference of glass transition temperature of the two phases reduced from 86.4 to 67.3°C with the addition of 5 wt% of ZDMA compared to original TPVs. Scanning electron microscope showed that with the addition of 5 wt% ZDMA, the crosslinked SR phase formed a network structure when TPU phase was etched with dimethyl sulfoxide. By adding 5 wt% of ZDMA, the torques during mixing, tensile strength, and tear stress of TPVs were improved by 150%, 273%, and 217% respectively, compared to the TPVs without ZDMA.Highlights The compatibility between TPU and SR was improved by adding ZDMA. The mechanism for ZDMA enhancing the interface of TPU/SR TPVs was discussed. The addition of ZDMA improves the mechanical properties of TPU/SR TPVs. An appropriate loading of ZDMA used for TPU/SR TPVs was discussed.
