Development of ultrahigh resolution radiation imaging detector using 1 mm channel size Si-PM array combined with 0.2 mm × 0.2 mm pixelated GAGG plate

Abstract: A: For precise distribution measurements of gamma photons or beta particles, high resolution radiation imaging detectors are required. Reducing the size of the photodetectors combined with small pixel scintillators is a possible method to improve the spatial resolution of the scintillator based radiation imaging detectors. In this paper, we used a 1mm channel size silicon photomultiplier (Si-PM) array combined with a small pixel scintillator array and evaluated the performance for gamma photons and beta partic… Show more

“…. For a position‐sensitive β‐ray detector, we used a 35 × 35 × 1‐mm 3 Ce‐Doped(La, Gd) 2 Si 2 O 7 (La‐GPS) scintillator, which has 300‐µm fine‐pitch (i.e., 300‐µm micro‐grooved pixels) fabricated by a dicing saw . We coupled the La‐GPS detector to a 2‐inch multianode position‐sensitive photomultiplier tube (PS‐PMT, Hamamatsu H8500).…”

“…For a position-sensitive b-ray detector, we used a 35 9 35 9 1-mm 3 Ce-Doped (La, Gd) 2 Si 2 O 7 (La-GPS) scintillator, 9 which has 300-µm fine-pitch (i.e., 300-µm micro-grooved pixels) fabricated by a dicing saw. [10][11][12] We coupled the La-GPS detector to a 2-inch multianode position-sensitive photomultiplier tube (PS-PMT, Hamamatsu H8500). For the detector window, we used three sheets of 12-µm-thick aluminized Mylar foil as light shielding.…”

“…Fiber-structured scintillators [4,5] provide one possible method to improve the scintillator plate. These are promising materials for high-resolution Xray imaging detectors as well as alpha cameras [6,7] or gamma cameras [8,9], and fiber-based scintillator is now becoming the new active research field in scintillator development [10][11][12][13].…”

“…Fiber-structured scintillators [1,2] are promising materials for high-resolution X-ray imaging detectors as well as alpha cameras [3,4] or gamma cameras [5,6], and their use is now becoming a new active research field in scintillator development [7][8][9][10]. One possible method for developing a fiber-structured scintillator is to enclose the scintillator in a large number of small holes in a capillary plate.…”
