Development of Unique House Mouse Resources Suitable for Evolutionary Studies of Speciation

Abstract: Two house mouse subspecies, Mus musculus domesticus and Mus musculus musculus, form a hybrid zone in Europe and represent a suitable model for inferring the genes contributing to isolation barriers between parental taxa. Despite long-term intensive studies of this hybrid zone, we still know relatively little about the causes and mechanisms maintaining the 2 taxa as separate subspecies; therefore, to gain insight into this process, we developed 8 wild-derived inbred house mouse strains. In order to produce stra… Show more

“…F 1 hybrid sterility F 1 hybrid male sterility is polymorphic among strains of M. m. musculus and M. m. domesticus (Vyskočilová et al 2005(Vyskočilová et al , 2009Good et al 2008b;Piálek et al 2008) and has not been evaluated in crosses between the wild-derived inbred strains PWD/PhJ (M. m. musculus PWD ) and WSB/EiJ (M. m. domesticus WSB ). To determine if F 1 males were sterile in crosses between these strains, we quantified a range of phenotypes in 70-day-old F 1 and parental males.…”

“…Fertility in F 1 hybrids has only been evaluated in a handful of inbred and wild representatives of M. m. castaneus, and F 1 hybrid male sterility is known to be polymorphic among strains of M. m. musculus and M. m. domesticus (Vyskočilová et al 2005(Vyskočilová et al , 2009Good et al 2008b;Piálek et al 2008). Furthermore, inbreeding depression in the parental strains might mask reduced fertility in the F 1 's.…”

“…Three of them (Stlt, StrA, StrB [39]) are derived from M. m. domesticus and were obtained from the breeding facility in Studenec (Czech Republic). Their average ages at dissection were 21 weeks (ranging from 10 to 72 weeks), 23 weeks (ranging from 16 to 45 weeks) and 20 weeks (ranging from 9 to 33 weeks), respectively.…”
