Development Potential Assessment for Wind and Photovoltaic Power Energy Resources in the Main Desert–Gobi–Wilderness Areas of China

Abstract: The large-scale centralized development of wind and PV power resources is the key to China’s dual carbon targets and clean energy transition. The vast desert–Gobi–wilderness areas in northern and western China will be the best choice for renewable energy development under multiple considerations of resources endowment, land use constraints, technical conditions, and economic level. It is urgent to carry out a quantitative wind and PV resource assessment study in desert–Gobi–wilderness areas. This paper propose… Show more

“…However, the energy consumption capacity of these regions' local markets is limited, and their power grid infrastructure is relatively weak. Hence, the construction of supporting transmission projects involving high-voltage and long-distance transmission lines is necessary to transmit excess electricity to load centers for consumption [4,5]. To address the challenges posed by the volatility, intermittency, and uncontrollability of wind and solar power generation, a combined WSTS system for outbound transmission utilizing the complementary characteristics of wind and solar power in the time domain is used to smooth out the power delivery curve and alleviate peak load pressure at the receiving end.…”

“…In recent years, large-scale wind farms (WFs) have become popular to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels in China [1,2]. The growing penetration of wind power brings deep changes in the electromechanical transient stability of power systems due to the low inertia and weak voltage support capability of wind power [3,4].…”

“…Potential drivers for the spatiotemporal capacity factor variability are (1) wind turbine siting, (2) hub height, (3) wind turbine technology, and (4) curtailed wind energy. Wind turbine site suitability depends on the available wind resource, geographical restrictions, and the socio-economic potential [3][4][5][6].…”
