The similarity model test is one of the important means to study the engineering properties of soft rock. This study aims to develop similar materials for silty mudstone, which has characteristics of low strength and water expansion, based on traditional materials including gypsum, barite powder, clay minerals, and distilled water. The orthogonal design method was used to determine the mixing ratios of the similar materials. The density, uniaxial compressive strength, tensile strength, elastic modulus, and Poisson’s ratio were selected as control indicators of the similar materials. The results show that the water content is the dominant factor for the density, tensile strength, elastic modulus, and Poisson’s ratio of the similar materials of silty mudstone, while the gypsum content is the dominant factor for the uniaxial compressive strength. The physical and mechanical properties of the similar material samples with water content of 19%, barite powder ratio of 32%, and gypsum mass of 250 g show good similarity to those of the raw silty mudstone. The water absorption and expansibility of similar materials with clay mineral ratio of 12% are consistent with those of the raw silty mudstone. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation indicates that the similar material with optimal mixing ratios exhibits a similar microstructure to that of silty mudstone.

This study aimed to investigate the formation mechanism of the mud-inclusion-type underground debris flows of natural caving underground mines. The characteristics of fine moraine particles flowing through the coarse-grained ore bed were used to analyze the formation process of mud inclusions in the caving ore bed through a physical model test. Based on the movement behavior of the mud inclusions of moraine in the caving ore bed, a formation-mechanism generalized model of underground debris flows with mud inclusions was established. The model was used to examine the formation mechanism of mud-inclusion-type underground debris flows in natural caving. The results showed that the fine moraine particles had good cross-flow characteristics in the process of drawing coarse-grained ore. The accumulation of fine moraine in the ore bed was a prerequisite for the formation of mud inclusions, and the fluid inclusions were formed by a mixture of the particles with the infiltrated water. When mud inclusions in moraine are affected by many factors, such as ore-drawing vibrations, blasting vibrations, and groundwater, the inclusions undergo multiple migration–stop–migration cycles, resulting in separation or fusion. However, the inclusions are released along the optimal random pore path to the outlet, forming a certain scale of underground debris flows accidents. The accuracy and reliability of the formation mechanism were verified through geophysical explorations based on the equivalent inverse flux transient electromagnetic method. This study not only broadens the research on debris flow, but also provides theoretical guidance for the prevention and control of underground debris flows.

In this study, the No. 6 pit in the eastern mining area of the Jinning phosphate mine in China was taken as the research background. In order to reduce the cost of filling, an improved pillarless sublevel caving method is proposed. This method greatly improves the ore recovery rate by adding a recovery route. In addition, the combination of similar material simulation experiments and numerical simulations (discrete element and universal distinct element code) revealed the deformation and failure laws of the surrounding roof rock and the characteristics of the surface subsidence. The results indicate the following. (1) The similar simulation experimental results indicate that the deformation of the overlying rock layer originated from the direct roof of the goaf and gradually developed into the deep part of the rock layer. An irregular stepped caving zone formed in the goaf. The maximum surface subsidence was located above the phosphorus orebody, and it gradually decreased toward both sides. As the stope approached propulsion, the location of the maximum subsidence gradually moved toward the propulsion direction. (2) The numerical results revealed that the displacement of the overlying strata was nonlinear, and it decreased with increasing roof height. A support pressure concentration area was formed within a certain range of the stope roof. The numerical simulation results are basically consistent with the similar simulation experimental results.
