Developmental dyslexia in Hindi readers: Is consistent sound‐symbol mapping an asset in reading? Evidence from phonological and visuospatial working memory

Abstract: Phonological processing deficit is a hallmark of developmental dyslexia indicating a core cognitive dysfunction. Importance of working memory in reading and its association with the tasks measuring phonological processing is also debated in research. The present study investigates the role of working memory, phonological, and orthographic processing in Hindi‐speaking dyslexic children (22 dyslexic and 23 control, of Grade 4). Hindi has a consistent symbol‐sound mapping with an extensive list of visually comple… Show more

“…These results, when considering our findings, further suggest that orthographic processing could be an important measure to use with young gifted learners. Orthographic processing has long been recognized as contributor to reading development (e.g., Bajre & Khan, 2019; Bosse et al, 2015; Zarić et al, 2021). Share (2011) emphasized that individual differences exist not only in the skill of decoding but also in the speed and accuracy within which individuals assimilate word specific orthographic knowledge.…”

“…Papers using Cyrillic and Greek alphabets would have been largely comparable to Latin alphabets, but these did not turn up in our search. Whilst we did find a number of papers using Devanagari, Devanagari may be less comparable to Latin alphabets [ 13 ].…”

“…Dyslexia is a developmental process (Bajre & Khan, 2019) needs cognitive attention (Oganian & Ahissar, 2012) and phonemic awareness to improve reading skill (Ukrainetz et al, 2011). Literature found that there was no significant relationship in the auditory, temporal process, and reading disabilities (Bowey & Muller, 2005;Jena & Choudhury, 2020) but visual strategy has significant impact on phonological presentation (Barnett et al, 2020;Boada & Pennington, 2006).…”
