“…Throughout the lifetime of all females the alfalfa stems, which serve as both feeding and oviposition sites (Hendrickson and Barth 1978), were changed daily and the eggs were counted to evaluate both age-specific and total fecundity. Stems were held in water for an additional 9 days to determine the incidence of egg eclosion, as egg development requires approximately 6 days at 20°C (Mellors and Helgesen 1978). Females that laid no fertile eggs were considered as unmated, although it is possible that unsuccessful mating may have occurred.…”
