“…Researchers have suggested that interventions that encourage healthy self-esteem may be effective in reducing depressive experiences of youth (Ju & Lee, 2018; Sowislo & Orth, 2013). It is important to note that one of the core features of depression is feelings of worthlessness, which is also a key feature of low self-esteem (American Psychiatric Association, 2013; Tsaousis, 2016).…”

“…It has been argued that specific self-esteem dimensions cannot be equated with global self-esteem (Rosenberg, Schooler, Schoenbach, & Rosenberg, 1995), and therefore, results using a specific dimension of self-concept or a composite measure should not be generalized to global self-esteem without investigation. Nonetheless, researchers have found that self-esteem mediates longitudinal associations between different types of victimization (e.g., child maltreatment; Ju & Lee, 2018) and depression, providing evidence for the influence of self-esteem on the development of mental health disorders. These effects may be difficult to examine with traditional moderator/mediator analyses due to the complexity of the developmental pathways (e.g., reciprocal associations) involving multiple domains that share varying influences across the developmental periods of childhood and adolescence.…”

“…MacPhee and Andrews () explored several risk factors accounting for the onset of depression in early adolescents; the results showed that self‐esteem was the strongest predictor of depression in both boys and girls. Additionally, most previous studies of the vulnerability effect of low self‐esteem have focused on global self‐esteem (Babore, Trumello, Candelori, Paciello, & Cerniglia, ; Ju & Lee, ; Rieger et al ., ), rather than domain‐specific self‐esteem. Harter () suggested that domain‐specific self‐esteem levels would also relate to the development of depression.…”

“…Self-esteem is defined as an individual"s perception on his own regardless of positive view or negative view (Ciccarelli and White, 2015). It indicates on how one could rate himself based on self-worthiness (Ju and Lee, 2018). Individual will experience different stress level due to different perception on personal"s strengths.…”
