Deviations in cortex sulcation associated with visual hallucinations in schizophrenia

Abstract: Hallucinations, and auditory hallucinations (AH) in particular, constitute the most typical and disabling schizophrenia symptoms. Although visual hallucinations (VH) have been largely neglected in psychiatric disorders, a recent review reported a 27% mean prevalence of VH in schizophrenia patients. The pathophysiology underlying VH in schizophrenia remains elusive. Several schizophrenia studies reported a significant effect of age on VH; therefore, we tested the hypothesis that the neurodevelopmental model of … Show more

“…This approach was chosen because of the relatively large number of subjects included in our sample and to avoid biases related to the operator and potential shape distortion resulting from group normalization. This procedure has been previously applied to schizophrenia, major depressive disorder and BD . All processing steps were reviewed visually by SS.…”

“…As noted in a review (Waters et al, 2014) the nature of the relationship between hallucinations of different sensory modalities has hardly been examined. Although this situation is not unique for schizophrenia spectrum disorders (Waters et al, 2014), some studies indicate that the prevalence of multimodal hallucinations may be severely underestimated in this group (Goodwin et al, 1971) while others indicate that the presence of MMHs may be indicative of an underlying organic etiology (Roberts, 1984;Albert, 1987), or, in children and adolescents, of a more severe expression of schizophrenia (David et al, 2011;Jardri et al, 2014;Cachia et al, 2015).…”

“…Auditory hallucinations (AH), which are experienced by 60-70% of subjects with schizophrenia [Andreasen and Flaum, 1991;Cachia et al, 2015], may be characterized as false perceptions of sounds including words, whole sentences, or entire conversations in the absence of an identifiable, external stimulus [Jardri et al, 2011[Jardri et al, , 2013. Unlike nonclinical subjects who may experience isolated, infrequent AH [van Lutterveld et al, 2014], in subjects with schizophrenia, AH disrupts the thought content and reality-testing capacity of patients, resulting in severe functional impairment in academic, occupational and interpersonal relationship domains, typically during the most productive years of adulthood [Fletcher and Frith, 2009;Shergill et al, 2001].…”
