Device and Method for Noninvasive Glucose Assessment

Abstract: The CoG device employs a unique mathematical approach to predict glucose concentrations based on multiple optical signals. The first clinical results indicate that the device may show appropriate agreement with reference methods to be used for pain-free glucose assessment in daily routine.

“…The presented results (Clark grid error = 90.32% in zone A, MAE = 10.37) suggests that our approach is competitive with those found in the literature: E. Monte-Moreno et al [48] reported 87.7% of points in zone A, Y. Segman et al [49] 81.2% for zone A, and I. Harman-Boehm et al [50] reported a 96% of the points are in zones A and B, but only 57% are in zone A [50]. Despite the fact that non-invasive glucose meters have been presented previously, most of their applications are implemented locally, and the measurements are carried out in vitro or using a robust setup.…”

“…Also shown is the illumination irradiance (intensity normalized) for four LEDs with indicated halfwidths from Hamamatsu Catalog 18 at selected center wavelengths, as mentioned by Segman. 10 as shown in Figure 4. For digital (off-the-shelf) cameras, the resulting infrared sensitivity would cause color degradation, so it is usually blocked by a single, shared IR cut-off filter.…”

“…Even after evaluation of the terminology hints about the network, the components, as mentioned by Segman (the branches and loops), cannot be clearly identified. Taking a look at his Figure 2, 10 it stands out, that vectors may be part of multiple branches due to similar glucose values, but there seems to be only one "optimal loop." There is also a group mentioned with either an open or closed loop.…”

“…When interpreting these results, it needs to be considered that the YSI reference and the invasive CoG component measure capillary blood glucose, while the NI CoG technology predicts tissue glucose in the fingertip using traversed light (visible to IR) that is detected by color image sensors. 20 Dynamic changes in the blood glucose content are known to be reflected in the tissue with a lag time induced by the shift of glucose from the vascular compartment to the interstitial fluid). 24 This lag time has been described to last from less than 10 minutes to more than 45 minutes based on the diabetes stage, and in particular also related to the severity of secondary microcirculation disorders.…”
