Di-n-butyl phthalate-induced phytotoxicity in Hordeum vulgare seedlings and subsequent antioxidant defense response

Abstract: Di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) is one of the frequently detected phthalates in environmental samples. The effects of phthalates are extensively studied in the animals but the effects on plants are scarce. Therefore, the present study is aimed to envisage the effects of DBP on the antioxidative defense system in Hordeum vulgare L. seedlings grown under laboratory conditions for 7 d. The activities of different antioxidative enzymes were enhanced in the shoots. In the roots, the activity of guaiacol peroxidase incre… Show more

“…The activity of GR was also observed to increase under the exposure of DEP in S. polyrhiza ( Cheng & Cheng, 2012 ). The activity of GR was observed to be altered significantly under the exposure of phthalates ( Kumari & Kaur, 2020a ). The other pollutants are also reported to be aggravated the GR activity in different crop plants ( Katerova et al, 2021 ).…”

“…: 2147-4249 environment, and resistance to microbial degradation is the main factors for their ubiquitous presence in the air, water, and food (Liu et al, 2014;Kumari and Kaur, 2020). Humans get exposed to phthalates through different pathways like inhalation, ingestion, and direct contact through the skin which can cause developmental and reproductive toxicity.…”

“…Other than physical properties like inhibition of root or shoot elongation, and reduction of biomass, or disruption of photosynthetic organ, PAE also induced activity of antioxidant enzymes. In barley plants (Horderum vulgare), DBP contamination cause reduction in superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, glutathione reductase activity, while on the other hand increase guaiacol peroxidase and catalase activity (Kumari & Kaur, 2020).…”
