Many investigators consider children’s drawings to be an important test in the evaluation of stress and anxiety, but few studies have examined the reliability and validity of indicators of emotional distress in children’s projective drawings. In this report, we describe screening tests in children coming to the Friuli Venezia Giulia region in Northeastern Italy from non-European Union regions and suspected to have celiac disease, the problems involved in diagnosis of the disease, and the “drawn double nostalgia” of Romanian children for both Italian food and traditional Romanian foods. Of 3150 Western European cases, we found 712 with positive antibodies for IgA/IgG antitransglutaminase, 174 with a positive antiendomysium antibody confirmation test, and 20 with an IgA deficit. Of the children examined, 93% were children native to Western Europe, 4% were immigrants from Eastern Europe, and 1.6% originated from Africa. Among these, four Romanian children with celiac disease brought in their drawings, as requested in a hospital questionnaire. The prevalence of celiac disease is destined to increase among immigrants. Economic problems are common, and the twin nostalgia of immigrant children for foods and tastes that are “cozonac” (from the native country) and “panettone” (Italian cake flavor) represents a problem that will be difficult to resolve. Only some children’s hospitals in Italy, ie, Burlo Garofolo and Gaslini, public and private foundations, or volunteer associations would be able to deal with this problem.

Context:Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is caused by an immune-mediated destruction of pancreatic beta cells. Other autoimmune diseases can be observed in association with T1DM. The screening for celiac disease (CD) and Hashimoto's thyroiditis is necessary due to the increased prevalence of these pathologies in T1DM patients.Aims:This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of autoimmune markers for pancreatitis, thyroiditis, and CD in racially admixtured children and adolescents with T1DM.Settings and Design:Cross-sectional clinic-based study.Methods:Seventy-one patients with T1DM (average: 11.6 ± 5.1 years). In all patients, the following antibodies were surveyed: Anti-glutamic acid decarboxylase (anti-GAD), immunoglobulin A (IgA) anti-transglutaminase (anti-tTG), Antithyroglobulin (AAT), anti-thyroid peroxidase (anti-TPO), and IgA.Statistical Analysis Used:The quantitative variables were expressed as a mean and standard deviation and the qualitative variables in contingency tables. Student's t-test and χ2 tests were used to assess the differences between the groups. The level of significance was established as P < 0.05.Results:The prevalence of anti-GAD antibodies was 5.9%; anti-tTG IgA, 7.4%; anti-TPO, 11.8%; and AAT, 11.8%.Conclusions:Children and adolescents with T1DM have increased the prevalence of antithyroid and CD-related antibodies. The positivity for anti-GAD and antithyroid antibodies was less frequent than in other studies. The prevalence of anti-tTG antibodies was similar to the literature.

OBJETIVO: Avaliar a prevalência da doença celíaca (DC) em crianças e adolescentes com diabetes melito tipo 1 (DM1) atendidos no Serviço de Endocrinologia Pediátrica do Hospital das Clínicas da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais. SUJEITOS E MÉTODOS: Incluídos no estudo crianças e adolescentes com diagnóstico prévio de DM1 acompanhadas no serviço no período de março de 1999 a abril de 2009, com idades entre zero e 18 anos. Todos foram rastreados para DC na primeira consulta e anualmente. A investigação foi realizada por meio da dosagem dos anticorpos da classe IgA (AGAA) e IgG (AGAG) antigliadina. Os pacientes com AGAA e/ou AGAG acima de duas vezes o valor de referência foram submetidos à biópsia intestinal. RESULTADOS: Foram excluídos 21 pacientes do total inicial de 384. Destes, 50 tiveram a sorologia positiva e 29 foram submetidos à biópsia intestinal. A prevalência encontrada foi de 3,1%. CONCLUSÃO: O rastreamento periódico da DC nos pacientes diabéticos deve ser encorajado, dada sua alta prevalência.
