Diabetics on hemodialysis in El-Minia Governorate, Upper Egypt: five-year study

Abstract: Diabetic nephropathy among HD patients in El-Minia Governorate is increasing but is less prevalent than in the United States and other Western countries, probably because of a higher incidence of other causes of ESRD in El-Minia governorate, or because of premature death of diabetic patients. Therefore, meticulous management of diabetic patients is mandatory.

[22] As well, hypertension represents a major cause of ESRD in other regional countries such as Egypt [23] , Turkey [24] and Iran. [25] In the US, hypertension represents 28% of the causes of ESRD cases.…”

“…CKD arising in the absence of diabetes, hypertension and other known risk factors is referred to as chronic kidney disease of uncertain etiology (CKDu) (2). CKDu has been detected in Central America, Egypt, India, and Sri Lanka (3)(4)(5)(6). While several hypotheses are being explored to uncover the causative agents/factors responsible for CKDu, a hypothesis that has been overlooked in Sri Lanka is an infectious etiology, such as hantavirus infection and leptospirosis (7).…”
