Diachronic Analysis of Farmers’ Strategies within a Protected Area of Central Italy

Abstract: The farm can be considered as the decision unit in the agricultural land management, therefore it is the most suitable scale to analyse the farmers' strategies of production. In this paper we describe the results of a comparison between two enquiries carried out in 1992-93 and 2009-10 on more than 30 farms, corresponding to about 1500 ha of utilised agricultural area (UAA), within the boundaries of the San Rossore, Migliarino, Massaciuccoli Regional Park (central-western Italy). “…From 2005 to 2008, we compared three continuous maize‐cropping systems under rainfed conditions—conventional (CON), low‐input (LOW) and protective (PRO) systems—characterized by a different use of chemical and mechanical inputs (Table ). The tested cropping systems are representative of the main cultivation methods adopted within the reclamation district (Silvestri et al, ).…”

“…In 2011, we surveyed a total of 25 farms using the methodology presented in Silvestri et al (2012) [24] in the plain area of the San Giuliano Terme municipality covering 2175 ha of utilized agricultural area (UAA), including about 20% of the farms in the area, and about 50% of the UAA (ARTEA, 2010) [25]. Among the farms surveyed, cereal-industrial cropping systems prevailed, even if there were small areas where vegetable and woody crop cultivation was dominant.…”

This triggered a series of environmental issues, among which land subsidence, which left the lake perched with respect to the low drained area.…”
